The “Year of The Playoff” continues at the Waste Management Open.

Gary Woodland had a number of reasons to get emotional as darkness fell on the TPC Scottsdale this past Sunday evening.

First, he was the latest PGA Tour Pro to have to endure a playoff before earning a win. Woodland shot a 18-under par 266, only to have Chez Reavie match that score, forcing a playoff. The Waste Management Open was the fourth tournament in five that has been decided in such a fashion. This season is shaping up to be the most competitive on the FedEx Cup Tour in recent memory.

Mindful of the stress that comes with a playoff, Woodland mercifully drained a putt on the first extra hole for the win. Tears streamed down his face as his third career victory and first since 2013 became a reality. The emotion only intensified as Woodland’s wife, Gabby, carried their infant son onto the course for a Victory Celebration.
